Angie Townsend was once an art teacher, a natural health therapist, a garden designer and for the last four years has had a successful career as a cake maker! Originally from Gloucestershire she settled in her beloved North Yorkshire some 35 years ago and now owns and runs The Tiny Cake Company based in Barningham.

Baking, once a hobby has now become a fulltime job and a labour of love - at first there were stints at markets, fairs and office blocks to promote her products. Over time Angie has built up a wealth of regular customers both in the retail and private sector. In the main she now bakes cakes and creates bespoke cake pops for independent retailers in North Yorkshire, the North East, for on-line orders, and frequently ships cake pops abroad. The company message is “Quality not Quantity” and Angie will not compromise on ingredients and uses only the finest of ingredients in her products.

Recently, The Tiny Cake Company introduced a new service of Corporate cupcakes & Cake pops for local companies and small businesses. Angie is able to print a business logo onto edible icing and present a package of individually iced cakes, decorated in a range of flat soft icing or buttercream swirls topped with a logo, from cute mini cupcakes to standard size cupcakes. Alternatively, customers can opt for the new cupcake – a cake pop – to spread their message! Cake pops are cake fondants, painstakingly hand rolled and shaped, dipped in chocolate and decorated in a variety of ways. Edible iced logos can be added to a cake pop, making it a quirky gift for business clients, business events, promotional launches or staff gifts.

Cake pops are enjoying a significant popularity due to their durability and reasonably long shelf life. They can be packaged individually and posted any distance. Angie found success with her creative cake pops by sponsoring the French fashion designer Bryce Aime at London Fashion Week last year and by supplying cake pops to Slayley Hall Celebrity Golf Challenge hosted by Ant & Dec. Angie has lost count of the numbers she has made – making hundreds weekly. Currently a long list of Diamond Jubilee cake pops are on the list!

These can be found locally at The Yorkshire Pantry, York and Weetons Harrogate.

Enjoy a weekend discovering art in some unique and beautiful spaces, ranging from blacksmith’s forges and farmyard studios to stone cottages and suburban living rooms at the 2012 North Yorkshire Open Studios.

The impact of the region’s stunning landscape, from the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales to the drama of the region’s coastline, can be tracked through the work of over 130 artists taking part. This is a great opportunity to seek out hidden gems and buy contemporary crafts, furniture, paintings, prints and sculpture directly from the artist.

Much of the adventure lies in tracking down the studios using the helpful event guide. Full details of all artists can be found on the website http://www.nyos.org.uk and a free studio guide can be sourced from organisers, Art Connections, tel 01756 748529, or email info@art-connections.org.uk

A preview exhibition, entitled ‘Secret Spaces, Hidden Gems’, which showcases the work of artists taking part will take place in the recently restored Edwardian Ambulatory Arcade at the Royal Hall in Harrogate from 31 May to 17 June.

This year there is also a superb events programme running alongside the main open studios programme, which includes workshops, secret tea parties and fascinating artists’ installations at a range of heritage sites.

FLAMIN’ JUNE GETS FLAMIN’ FUNNY AT HARROGATE THEATRES

The summer of big-time British events is upon us, from Her Majesty celebrating 60 years in the monarchal hot-seat to the London Olympics arriving in, um, London. The weather might not be warming up for the occasions, but the comedy sure is, as Harrogate Theatres boasts a hot, hot, hot line-up of comedy for June. We haven’t asked, but firmly believe Elizabeth II would laugh her royal socks off at this lot.

Devious tricksters Barry and Stuart kick things off when they bring new show Show & Tell to Harrogate Theatre on Friday 1 June. Slick magicians with a dark sense of humour and some macabre tricks up their sleeves, Barry And Stuart are breaking all the rules with this show of two halves where, in part one, they deliver the magic (show) and, in part two, murder the mystery (tell).

Harrogate’s best monthly chuckle fest, Hyena Comedy Club, returns to Harrogate Theatre for not one, but two dates in June. Saturday 2 June at 8pm boasts a formidably funny line-up of comedians guaranteed to leave your ribs well and truly tickled.

Yorkshire-man Tom Wrigglesworth is a story-telling gem, with his shaggy-dog tales finding him in all sorts of mischief. Also boasting bags of mischief, Carey Marx is a master craftsman of dark comedy, taking audiences into bad taste territory with a cheeky smile that’s hard to resist. Polished writing taken in surreal directions is something Marx has in common with Australian import Benny Boot, and, finally, compere Martin Mor deals in big gags delivered by an even bigger personality.

Irrationally irate about a number of everyday occurrences, Chris Addison has a beautifully funny way with language. Whether he’s raving about the impracticalities of Ugg boots or the Popemobile, Addison is fresh, funny and at Harrogate Theatre on Wednesday 6 June. In his latest show, The Time Is Now, Again, the middle-class liberal is still railing against the inconsequential to great comedy effect.

Engagingly geeky, Alex Horne takes meticulous to new extremes. For his latest show, Seven Years In The Bathroom, which comes to Harrogate Studio Theatre on Tuesday 12 June, he has decided to condense an entire human life into one jam-packed, high-concept hour. To do so, Horne has calculated how many months, years etc we spend on everyday activities, such as sleeping, bathing and having sex (okay, not EVERYday) and has found inventive ways to act them out.

Equally hare-brained, Dave Gorman’s energetic, obsessive brand of stand-up has taken him on some big adventures. There’s no doubt that Dave Gorman loves a quest, from scouring the world for other Dave Gormans in Are You Dave Gorman? to testing whether astrology actually works in Dave Gorman’s Important Astrology Experiment. He’s currently on his Power Point Presentation tour, which stops off at the Royal Hall on Wednesday 13 June and finds him performing a double-act with a projector screen.

Finally, if you’ve not laughed yourself into a gibbering wreck, the Hyena Comedy Club makes its second appearance of the month at Harrogate Theatre on Saturday 30 June, and it’s another corking line-up.

Part-magician, part-second hand car salesman, Pete Firman mixes jaw-dropping sleights of hand with cheesy patter and a too shiny suit to very funny effect. Welshman Lloyd Langford could barely be more laid-back, his mellow demeanour belying a remarkable skill for knife sharp gags and keen observations. Professional Yorkshireman Ray Peacock has a startling ability for off-the-cuff humour and loves to riff with a crowd. Audience, you have been warned.

Tickets for Harrogate Theatres events are available now and can be booked securely online at www.harrogatetheatre.co.uk or through the Harrogate Box Office on 01423 502 116.

YORKSHIRE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY:

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society was formed in 1837 and is a charity dedicated to supporting the farming industry and rural life. The value of the support it provides to regional farming and countryside initiatives has risen year on year to almost £1m. It is based at the Regional Agricultural Centre, Harrogate; the RAC includes Fodder, the Society’s regional food shop and café which opened in June 2009. Both the RAC and Fodder has won a number of awards, including in 2010, being named as the Observer Monthly Best Independent Local Retailer, and most recently it has been chosen as a finalist in the Taste of England category of the 2012 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.

This summer The Lord Chamberlain’s Men will come to the ornate and spectacular RHS Garden Harlow Carr with their all male production of Shakespeare’s devastating and gripping thriller: Macbeth.

Join the players on their journey from Cawdor Castle to Glamis Castle (both of which feature in the play) visiting the UK’s most beautiful and historic venues. Bring along a picnic, sit back and relax… but beware witches, traitors and murderers!

‘Double, double, toil and trouble’

At only two hours Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s shortest texts, but it contains some of his most famous lines, such as “Out damned spot- out I say”, “Double, double, toil and trouble.’ and ‘Is this a dagger I see before me? Macbeth’s ghostly apparitions, action-packed sword fights and blood-soaked conclusion are sure to get the heart racing!

‘Out Damned Spot- out I say!’

Mark Puddle, the company’s founder and creative director, says Macbeth has everything; a tragic love story, a lust for power and a drunken porter as well as fights, ghosts and plenty of blood! ‘Macbeth has always been considered one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The contrast of a beautiful summer’s evening and Macbeth’s tragic tale is a perfect fit for the famous castles and stately homes that we visit.’

‘Is this a dagger I see before me?’

The Lord Chamberlain’s Men will follow the critical success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by bringing Macbeth to some of the most beautiful open-air venues in the country, offering audiences outside the capital the perfect opportunity to see Shakespeare’s plays performed to the very highest standards, in the way the Bard first envisioned them…with an all-male cast, traditional costume and Elizabethan song and dance.

A brief plot synopsis…

When the triumphant soldier Macbeth discovers he’s destined to be the next King of Scotland, he and Lady Macbeth decide to risk everything in a desperate attempt to gain the throne. Macbeth’s violent dream of power becomes a paranoid nightmare.

Braaq Returning to Harrogate

Jester Antiques are bringing two oil paintings by Braaq (Brian Shields) to the Yorkshire Antiques & Art Fair on May 26th & 27th which are the highlights of a selection of his work including several signed prints with a series of sketches at the bottom. These have come from a private collection and are an authentic delight to see at the fair. They are highly appropriate to show at this event given the long connection that Braaq had with the town of Harrogate and the affection that his work generates. The two oils are among a good showing of oil paintings and decorative items that Jester Antiques will be selling. The fair is organised by Bowman Antiques Fairs and held at the Yorkshire Event Centre on the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

Brian Shields (1951-1997) was a Liverpool born English painter. He is best known for painting industrial scenes of northern Britain. He acquired the nickname “Braaq” in his school days – on account of his artistic talent he was nicknamed “Braque” after the French artist George Braque, a misspelling then transformed Braque into Braaq. He was the youngest of a large family (12 siblings), his father Dennis Shields was also an artist, one of his brothers, also Dennis, is a Lanarkshire (Coatbridge) based sculptor and painter. Most of his working life was spent in Harrogate, initially as a trainee chef. He was “discovered” when murals he painted on the walls of a Harrogate Hotel where he worked caused quite a stir and for several week there was a search in the local papers for this talented artist. It is generally accepted that this was a planned publicity stunt. Although successful as a living artist it seems he was often faced with financial problems. It is certainly the case that he is well remembered and liked in the Harrogate district and there a numerous anecdotes about painting pub signs for use of facilities; saving to buy a sports car from the local dealer – Harrogate Horseless Carriage as well as getting helping hands throughout his career. His paintings are well collected and sell for considerable value. Brian was made bankrupt toward the end of his career. He died of a brain haemorrhage.

Heart Gallery, Hebden Bridge - May all your dreams come true

A truly magical exhibition showcasing contemporary jewellery and craft chosen from the finest UK based makers and designers. We want to whisk you away from today and take you back to rediscover and reminisce. Work will incorporate vintage stories, nostalgia, fairytales, rhymes, folklore, sayings and dreams. May all your dreams come true as you browse the gallery and transport yourself to anywhere you want to be. We shall have nationally acclaimed, Hebden Bridge based, story-teller Ursula Holden Gill with us for you to enjoy too during the day at the Private View, Sunday May 13th.

Award Winning Actress, Ursula Holden Gill has emerged in recent years as one of the North’s most innovative and captivating Storytellers.

Her quirky, unique sets are influenced largely by 19th Century Music Hall, Lancashire Dialect, Westmorland Clogging, Folk, Traditional and Original Song, Puppetry, Clean but Cheeky Stand Up and essentially, life.

For the Heart Gallery Exhibition Launch of ‘May All Your Dreams Come True’, on Sunday 13 May, Ursula will be presenting a song and story set she calls Sightings of the Little People - suitable for adults and children alike.

It explores the idea that fairy sightings have been associated with – and are responsible for – the naming of more places in the British Isles than anywhere else in the world and that in the North of England alone we proudly boast numerous fairy bridges and glens, a few sets of standing stones, waterfalls, cottage gardens, and a variety of hills and wells!

By revealing how such places came to take their title Ursula will welcome all who attend the launch into a most controversial debate that has fascinated artists for hundreds of years – are fairies real or not… and if so, what are they? Fanciful Friend or Malevolent Foe? Further, who can see the little people and how?

Now & Then Events have teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness about dementia.

Walking through the York City gates, it’s easy for visitors to feel as if they’ve been transported back in time. So, it is no wonder that a city so steeped in beauty and history should be the new home to vintage fashion. Between March and June alone,York will have been home to nearly ten vintage events, ranging from tea parties to full-blown festivals, nearly half of which involve participation byYork’s own 2012 Visit York Tourism Award Finalist, Now & Then Events.

Now & Then Events have teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness about dementia. If you happened to be in the area of the Knavesmire this past September, you may have seen a throng of people engaged in vintage-themed activities as they prepared for a 1, 6, or 10-mile walk. The Memory Walk, brought about by the collaboration between Now and Then Events and the Alzheimer’s Society, sought to raise awareness and understanding of dementia while embracing nostalgia to help participants think about the person behind the disease. In the Yorkshire and Humber region alone, an estimated 60,500 people are currently suffering from dementia with the number expected to rise in coming years. The two organizations are joining forces again on Wednesday, May 23rd, to host a Vintage Tea Party on Parliament Street Between 10am and 4pm.

The tea party, which coincides with Dementia Awareness Week, will not be your run-of-the-mill cakes and china affair. Whether you’re interested in pre-loved books, antique cars, the musical stylings of bygone eras, or affordable vintage fashion, you won’t lack for things to keep you occupied. In addition to the festivities, the Alzheimer’s Society will be on-site to provide information and support to anyone interested in learning more about the disease, the services the organization provides, or how to help in the fight against dementia.

So, come join us on the 23rd for a full day of vintage fun and fashion, or simply drop in for some tea and cakes. After all, the calories don’t count if it’s for charity!
