Huddersfield ice cream maker Yummy Yorkshire has become an official partner of the Huddersfield Giants’ ‘Side by Side’ charity campaign.

The campaign, which was launched in April works to raise money for the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust and the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund along with the Giants’ own Talent Builder Programme.

Yummy Yorkshire has pledged its support to the campaign, providing sponsorship in addition to having a physical presence at upcoming Side by Side events, the first one being the Giants’ Celebration Game on Sunday 23 June.

The game against Leeds Rhinos is always one of the biggest matches of the Huddersfield Giants’ season and was chosen by the Super League Club as the perfect opportunity to celebrate all things ‘Side by Side’ and armed forces.

The event will see Yummy Yorkshire showcasing its newly refurbished retro ice cream trailer in the Side by Side zone in front of the John Smith’s Stadium. On offer will be a selection of seven flavours of artisan dairy ice cream for fans to buy.

In addition, the armed forces will be providing a host of activities to do on the day including a paintball range, climbing wall, modern and heritage weapon stands and equipment plus much more.

Yummy Yorkshire will also be supporting the Huddersfield Giants’ fundraising 20/20 cricket day on Sunday 18 August at Lascelles Hall Cricket Club.

The family cricket day, which was held for the first time last year, will see a team of Giants ‘select 11’ players face off against a combined military team with all funds raised at the event being donated to the ‘Side by Side’ campaign.

Speaking about the partnership Jeremy Holmes, co-founder of Yummy Yorkshire says: “Yummy Yorkshire is very proud of its Yorkshire roots; our ice cream is made in Yorkshire by Yorkshire folk so what better than to support the Yorkshire Regiment & the Yorkshire Gunners. The fit made sense to us and we are keen to support the hard work of the Huddersfield Giants.”

Huddersfield Giants Business Development Manager Robbie Hunter-Paul adds: “The aim of the Side by Side campaign is to create events and activities that allow the Huddersfield and Yorkshire community to come together and raise funds for all three of these important causes and organisations in a way that is relaxed, engaging and fun for the entire family.

“Yummy Yorkshire being a successful, family-orientated business on our doorstep therefore seemed a perfect partner to the campaign. Not only will their support help raise funds for the armed forces charities and our own talent builder programme but their ice cream will undoubtedly go down a treat with fans on event days too!”

To keep up to date with all things ‘Side by Side’ you can follow the campaign on its twitter page, @SidebySideHG or keep updated via the Giants website on www.giantsrl.com

Yummy Yorkshire is located off the A629 between Huddersfield and Penistone. Visit www.yummyyorkshire.co.uk for further details and directions to the farm.

Gallery Forty-Nine’s new exhibition highlights the plight of pollinating insects, and celebrates the centenary of the Chelsea Flower Show.

An innovative group of Yorkshire artists gained inspiration for the work in our forthcoming exhibition from an Everingham flower farm.

‘Gardens and Flowers’ opens on Saturday 1st June with a preview from 12 – 4 pm. It will be a big, beautiful exhibition with an installation of 2D and 3D work by acclaimed Yorkshire artists including Corinne Young, Shirley Vauvelle, Claire West, Samantha Bryan, Sharon Winter, Chris Moss, Esther Munday, Margaret Hockney, Jill Ford, Helaina Sharpley, George Hainsworth, Margaret McLellan, Lee Karen Stow and Meg Burkill.

Inspired by and linked to the abundant wildlife destinations in the East Yorkshire area, the exhibition sets out to reflect the beauty of native British flowers and to highlight the plight of pollinating insects, and the importance of our gardens and parks to their recovery.

Corinne Young, who has also curated the exhibition, said: “We wanted to create an exciting mixed exhibition that was inspired by nature and wildlife, and were delighted when Gill Hodgson of Flowers from the Farm offered to let the artists gather source material at her farm near Pocklington.

I’m passionate about nature and have done lots of research into pollinating insects and the importance of nectar and pollen rich flowers and was thinking about organizing a nature-inspired exhibition, so Gill’s invitation was very opportune.”

Gallery Forty-Nine is also involving many of the area’s nature tourism destinations in the exhibition, including the RHS, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Events (especially of note is the Wolds Wildflower event on 16th June), RSPB, Yorkshire Coast Nature, Be the Start (B&Q) and The Secret Gardens (open gardens taking place as part of a week-long summer festival in Gallery Forty-Nine’s local area of Old Town, Bridlington).

The exhibition runs from 1st – 29th June, and will feature nature-inspired textiles, paintings, sculptures and ceramics. The exhibition will then move on to the Art & Rose Gallery in Pocklington on 6th July.

Step back in time as Brighouse is going back to the 1940s era on the weekend of 1st-2nd June. Come and see what life was like in this significant time in our history as the town centre and shops are transformed. You’ll be able to sit in a Spitfire, ride on a vintage bus, bake 40’s bread, see Churchill and Eisenhower, sing-along with George Formby, learn to dance the Lindy Hop, go to see a variety concert and dance at the Ritz. This is just a flavour of the wonderful events taking place over this family fun weekend.

The whole town centre will become the venue for a host of 1940’s events and displays from Spitfires to vintage vehicles, from home cooking to 1940’s dress and make up. Why not join in the fun and come dressed in 40’s style and help bring a real period feel to the town.

Steven Lord, one of the organisers said “We are aiming to portray the Home front during Britain’s finest hour. We are celebrating the good things of that period, the community spirit; make do & mend and entertainment for young and old alike. It will be a cracking family day out!”

The build up to the exciting events of the weekend’ starts on Thursday night (30th May) with a classic cinema evening at the Civic Hall. The Oscar winning Humphrey Bogart film Casablanca will be shown at the Civic which is converted for the night into a traditional cinema complete with ice cream interval and organ recital. A pie and peas supper is also included.

On Friday 31st May, the Civic Hall will host a very different evening’s entertainment with Boo Booby Doo’s Burlesque Cabaret Show. Across the town you can dance the night away at the Ritz Ball Room.

But it’s Saturday and Sunday when the real fun begins! Imagine seeing Brighouse as it was in 1945. John Buxton of Ryecorn Wholefoods can’t wait to see what the town will look like. “Just imagine seeing streets full of people in 40’s outfits, military outposts and parades, shop window displays, eat food and drink from the period. It’ll be great!”
On both days attractions include vintage military and civilian vehicle displays, a Winston Churchill lookalike, a Cine News Reel show, performances from 1940s singers and dance lessons with the Back Step Boogie Club. Visitors will also have the chance to climb in the cockpit of a full size replica Spitfire and enjoy displays from the Land Army, RAF, Luftwaffe, Dambusters, French Resistance and sample W.I. cooking to name but a few. If all of this isn’t enough, a vintage market will be held and youngsters will be able to enjoy period fairground rides.

The evening of Saturday 1st June can be spent enjoying either a 1940s style Variety Show at the Civic Hall, a 1940s dance at the Ritz Ballroom or a Summer Sounds concert with the Brighouse and Rastrick Band at the Central Methodist Church.

The highlight of the weekend will be on Sunday 2nd June when there will be a fly past by a Spitfire from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Other Sunday events include a local history talk by Chris Helme at the Salvation Army and in the morning a Remembrance Service will be held in respect of those who lost their lives during the war.
The event will culminate in communal singing and dancing in the streets.

This wonderful event has been arranged by the volunteers of the Brighouse Business Initiative who expect it to become a regular fixture in the diary.

Lesley Adams of Simply Flowers in Brighouse, one of the organisers comments, “We are all very excited about the 1940s weekend which is the first of its kind to be held in Brighouse. The response has been overwhelming and we are anticipating record numbers of visitors to the town. We have organised a Park and Ride service which will collect people from the train station and a car parking area near the motorway using a vintage bus!
Not only will the 1940s weekend be a fantastic family event but we anticipate that it will really help put Brighouse on the map as a great place to visit at any time of the year.”

For more information about the event, how to volunteer to help, the park and ride service and to buy tickets for the performances visit www.brighouse1940sweekend.co.uk

‘We’ve brought a new way of watching films to Leeds’ proclaims Sneaky Experience’s director, Julia Benfield. The next Sneaky Experience event on Saturday, 8th June, will be part of their 2nd birthday celebrations. And what better way to celebrate than with a totally awesome 80’s theme!

This is Sneaky Experience where you buy tickets to watch a secret film at a secret location, accompanied by a live themed experience. Since forming in 2011, Sneaky Experience have treated ‘those in the know’ to some downright unusual scenes, from zombies attempting to break into venues, to Indiana Jones (complete with horse) chasing ‘the lost Ark’ in Holbeck!

Sneaky have already revealed a number of 80’s themed treats for the next event, including Roller Skating; an 80’s Silent Disco; themed stall holders and an 80’s make-up boutique. Plus, they’ll have their own cocktail mixologist, to celebrate their 2nd birthday in true style….hmm, could that be a clue to a certain 80’s film about cocktails?

Fancy dress certainly adds to the mood, so be prepared for audiences dressing in outrageous 80’s fashions; make-up clad New Romantics, legwarmers, stiletto’s, big shoulder pads and even bigger hair.

Of course, these delights won’t detract from the cult movie being shown.

Sneaky have confirmed this is their most ambitious event to date. It’s been revealed, there will be more character actors than ever, re-creatin

g iconic scenes from this well-loved 80’s favourite film.

Clues to the secret event can be found on Sneaky Facebook and Twitter pages, which so far have hinted at recruits, enrolment, ambitions and dreams. Our imagination is going into overload – and along with the added 80’s treats, it’s so much more than a trip to the cinema; it really is an experience and at £13 it’s a steal!

Sneaky Experience is taking place at Prime Studios, Kirkstall Road, Leeds on Saturday, 8th June. To keep up to date with the clues to the film, you can follow Sneaky on Twitter @sneakyexp or join in Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SneakyExp Tickets are available at www.secretfilm.eventbrite.co.uk

An artisan Yorkshire ice cream maker has invested over £20,000 into refurbishing a French charcuterie van from the 1960s as a mobile ice cream trailer.

Yummy Yorkshire Ice Cream, based on the outskirts of Huddersfield, worked with Evo Composites who specialise in the build of ice cream vans and vehicle conversion to authentically renovate the former French butcher’s trailer.

The van, which is nearly half a century old, will be taken on the road to food festivals, galas and private functions around the region. It has been modernised for Yummy Yorkshire’s needs, but its original retro features have been retained where possible.

As well as a scooping cabinet displaying seven different ice cream flavours, a serving hatch and additional fridges have been added to allow Yummy Yorkshire to cater for differing needs, serving not only ice cream but a variety of hot drinks, luxury milkshakes and snacks.

The trailer started life as a Citroen HY van and was first converted into a ‘véhicule de boucherie’ in 1967 by a French company, R.Masson & Fila S.A. The trailer was then purchased by Bolsover based Evo Composites in February 2012 who saw the potential in removing the driver’s cab and reviving the back end as a trailer, as did Yummy Yorkshire when they first saw the vehicle last year.

Jeremy Holmes, co-founder of Yummy Yorkshire says: “We saw the shell of the trailer as soon as we arrived at Evo Composites and immediately fell in love with it. We loved the drama of the lever handled opening and how wide the serving space was.

“Yummy Yorkshire ice cream is a very visual brand and we wanted the trailer to be representative of that and showcase our ice cream in the best possible way. Keeping as many of the original features such as the display counter and door handles was therefore really important to us. We are delighted with what Will and his team at Evo have achieved – the trailer represents our brand perfectly while remaining true to the original design.

“The multi-tasking facilities in the trailer mean that we can cater to people’s requirements now whatever the weather – sadly it’s not always warm enough for ice cream and we have noticed that in colder weather, people would rather have a tea or a coffee. We’re set up to cater for both now!”

The Yummy Yorkshire ice cream trailer made its first official public outing at the Malton Food Festival in May and is next due to appear at the Taste of Yorkshire Food Festival in Ripon on June 8.

Yummy Yorkshire is located off the A629 between Huddersfield and Penistone. Visit www.yummyyorkshire.co.uk for further details and directions to the farm.

Yorkshire artists Liz Clarke & Dave Marsh are putting on an exhibition and sale of their work at this lovely new Village Hall on the 8th and 9th of June. The exhibition includes original paintings and drawings, prints, cards and gifts made from the artwork. Liz and Dave paint a wide variety of subjects, including flowers, foliage, animals, birds, landscapes and mystical themes. Until quite recently, they had a little gallery on the moors near Ilkley, but they now travel with their art, putting on village hall exhibitions in a different village each month. Cowling Village Hall is the biggest venue so far, but they are confident that they can fill it! And if you have blank walls, Liz and Dave can help you fill them!
